If you run a business you know one of the hardest things is getting found online, a good first step is to create a facebook business page.
It is not as hard as you first think and I have broken this into a few simple stages for you to follow. You can print this off if it makes it easier for you while you create your facebook business page.
Stage One Sign Up To Create Your Facebook Business Page
An obvious one. Visit the facebook business signup page and you will be presented with 6 different options when creating your facebook business page. They are:
‘Local Business or Place’
‘Company, Organization, , or Institution’
‘Brand or Product’
‘Artist, Band, or Public Figure’
‘Entertainment’
‘Cause or Community’
Simply pick one that matches your category. You will most likely fall into one of the top three options. It is important you select the relevant category as it will help you rank in more relevant searches.
You will then be asked to fill in a little more information such as a business category for example and your address.
Note: Your category and name cannot be changed once your page is created. The only way to do this is delete this profile and create a new one from scratch.
Stage Two Add Information
Facebook will give you a three stage setup process called profile photo, get fans and basic info. Start at the beginning and make your facebook business page stand out by first adding a profile photo. Make the photo relevant to your listing. For example if you are a freelance website designer and trade under your own name then you could put a photo of you as your profile picture. However if you trade under a business name you should place your business logo as your facebook business page profile picture.
When moving on to stage two called ‘Get Fans’ it is important that you uncheck the options ‘share this page on my wall’ and ‘like this page’. The reason for this is that your page is blank. No one is going to like a blank page and it is not very professional. Do not invite friends at this stage either.
Stage three of this process allows you to enter your business website and a brief description. You can focus on any part of your business here but whatever you choose to do I suggest you make sure you use relevant key words. You can use the Google Adwords Keyword Tool to see what key words are popular in your industry. Make sure to include your USP (Unique Selling Point) in here so you stand out from your competitors.
Stage Three Adding Content
You can simply click the ‘edit page’ button on the top right to start adding content to your new facebook business page. You can add anything relevant to your business and also complete a description section.
I can hear you saying “I already done that”. In reality you haven’t. What you did in your about section was a short description. The main description in this section allows you to expand on what you have said in your About section. Again make sure you are using all relevant keywords.
Add as many relevant pictures as you can. Your latest work for example. You also can post as much content on your facebook ‘wall’. You can post whatever you like. Just make it relevant.
Stage Four Get The Word Out
So you have created your facebook business page. You have added your description. You have added photos. You are commenting and adding posts daily. Now what? Get the word out.
Now is the time to invite your friends. Tell them to ‘like’ your business page. It shows on their facebook page that they like your facebook business page and will encourage friends on their list to visit your page and perhaps like back and so the cycle continues.
If you have a business website you should be adding a facebook like button there too. A great place to visit is the facebook developer website here. If you click the button ‘build for websites’ you will see lots of tips and html code to add to your website to help drive traffic.
If you follow this link it will take you to a part of the Facebook Developer website where you can easily create facebook like buttons, boxes, updates etc by entering a few pieces of information. The website generates the code for you and you just place it on your website.
You should also create a facebook username for your business. Thats means you and your customers can access your account with the following URL: http://www.facebook.com/username
Simply log in to your facebook account, go to account then account settings. You will see the option username. Click edit. Simply enter your username and click save settings.
Note: You cannot change your username once it is set so choose wisely.
Stage Five Monitor Your Viewers
Facebook have just updated their ‘View Insights’ page. This is a powerful tool which is free and allows you to see who liked your page, who is talking about your page, what age and gender your viewers are, what stories are people talking about and much much more.
You can access facebook insights by clicking on the insights tab on the left of your facebook business page.
By using this powerful tool you can tailor your latest posts to suit your readers, gain greater exposure and get more likes.
I hope this wasn’t too long winded. Get your facebook business page online now. I wish you luck and if you have any comments or questions just drop them in the comments section below.
